Numerous things have pulled me away from doing tech work, the big one being a mishap that flooded our apartment, and necessitated my moving, temporarily, to my mom’s. Since I sell on Ebay, I have a ton of “inventory” that needed to be moved, sold, etc. I also moved all my computers. So I spent […]
The holidays left me stuffed, and so busy that work became an afterthought. My friend also had some medical issues and I ended up being a driver for most of the month. I swear, driving takes a lot out of me, physically and mentally. There are only a couple updates this month. Remove Docker’s Cached […]
I came across this in the uploads. Missed it for a long time. Should I start posting some other web shells I’ve collected?
This is a note I wrote to myself about how to add Django REST Framework to an existing project. It’s in PDF format, for reading. I didn’t have the time to create a real tutorial that builds up the API, or produce a really useful API. The intention is just to outline what parts get […]
I think VBA was supposed to sunset in the previous decade, but it just won’t go away. Back in the mid 2010s I wrote a lot of articles about VB.NET and VBA. It’s over at the old site. Can’t keep a glue language down. http://riceball.com/d/node/1469
I’m shocked at how many businesses still have websites that don’t work in mobile. For the average person, reading web pages on a smartphone is the primary way they read content on the web. Though I’m not 100% on board with “mobile first”, it should soon be the norm. To CSS hackers, “mobile first” just […]
This was an effort to find the best ways to create email messages that contain event information, so that the user can easily create a calendar item. The stock advice is to use .ics files, yet I don’t see many event publishers using .ics files. Instead, I saw people using well-formatted text, which gets automatically […]
Here’s a CRC32 function based on the work at: cCRC32. The main difference is that this is a function, and the crc32 table is not recalculated each time. If there’s a way to do constant arrays, I’d like to know. I haven’t found anything online.
Most of the information in this post is derived from http://www.tech-faq.com/convert-word-to-pdf.html. The code’s reposted here as a service, because the code there needs some editing. Also, a useful thread about executing OOo macros is at http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=2619. Here’s the code to automate the opening and saving of a file as PDF, using Open Office. Paste this […]
Here’s a noob-to-noob optimization trick. Suppose you have a database table with, say, 200,000 records, and you regularly select on multiple criteria. The rule for selection is to put the most specific WHERE clause first, and the least specific last. The goal is to cut down the search set to something small, and then search […]
